INSTRUCTIONAL PRACTICES AND DEVELOPMENT

As a student at Penn State, I have had to complete several projects that were aimed at developing my basic musicianship and honing my skills as an educator. You will find a portfolio of the different projects and lesson plans I have developed over my time as a student on this page. Additionally, you will find links for each lesson's video I had the privilege of leading with the high school ensembles such as Bellefonte Area High School band, Hollidaysburg Area High School band, and Altoona Area High School band.

Intro to Guitar - Music Reading Fundamentals

This plan was developed to teach the fundamentals of reading music notation to students, grades 9-12. The plan includes high quality, observable, accessible learning objectives, learning standards, strategies for delivery and assessment, and samples of student work, lesson plans, and grading rubrics. The gallery below features moments from my teaching of this unit as well as sample assignments for students.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PROJECTS

Completed during English 202B

Answering PA Teaching Application Questions

This assignment was completed in partial fulfillment of the course requirements for English 202B at Penn State. This section was specifically designed to develop educators through the means of preparation to answer teaching application questions. This assignment will see my response to two of the standard questions asked on a Pennsylvania teaching application.

Creating a grant to replace my future band room equipment

This project was developed based on factual. information gathered about my high school geography and demographic. As a sample of work, this is a demonstration of my understanding of how to effectively write a grant proposal for a project that will benefit my future students.
Disclaimer: I have no current association with or employment by Southmoreland School District. This Proposal is hypothetical and not to be used for grant application purposes.

ORCHESTRAL SONG COLLECTION AND ALALYSIS

The purpose of this project was to allow me to become familiar with the standard repertoire for string orchestra and a range of performance abilities of secondary school ensembles. In this project, I explored the music that is often performed by high school orchestras and the levels of performance abilities of these groups.

CHORAL SONG COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS

The purpose of this project was to explore the available repertoire available to teach students in public schools. The repertoire includes five songs that are teachable to grade levels K-5, as well as one choral work for the middle school choir and one for the high school choir.

GENERAL MUSIC SONG COLLECTION AND ALALYSIS

This project is a collection of several works that can be used with a variety of ages in the elementary general music setting. These pieces can be paired with activities in the general music classroom to allow for an engaging learning experience for young students.

SAMPLE LESSON PLAN

This project was created during one of my courses during my undergrad program. The object was to create a lesson plan and teach them to the class. The goal was to recognize what went well in teaching and what I can do to improve my teaching ability.

BELLEFONTE LESSON PLAN

This lesson plan was the fourth and final cooperative teaching experience at Bellefonte Area High School. This was developed to be a final touch and run-through of the assigned piece, A Vaughan Williams Christmas, and was approximately 20 minutes in length. In this plan, I primarily focused on the transitions between the different carols utilized throughout the piece. Additionally, I diagnose balance issues during particular sections. Upon completion of the refinement of these sections, I completed a very successful run-through of the piece

HOLLIDAYSBURG READING SESSION LESSON

This lesson plan was developed for a reading session with the Hollidaysburg Area High School band. I am conducting Foundry by John Mackey. In this plan, the primary objective is to sightread the piece and workshop a section of the music. In my rehearsal section, we discuss the different textures occurring within the music and begin identifying who is the leading voice, what they are playing, and how others need to play to complement that voice.
